At OSU Engineering, we work hard to transform innovative, new technologies into economic impact for Oregon and beyond. Because ultimately, innovation leads to prosperity. We also contribute top talent to the job market—new engineers who have had entrepreneurial and commercialization experience during their years studying at OSU. These men and women graduate work-ready, prepared to contribute to the economy, and impact the world.

Our faculty, researchers, and students are driven to help solve some of the world’s most pressing problems by turning ideas into innovation. This innovation often leads to new and better ways of doing things. Some examples:

• Our research into biodiesel production has resulted in a tiny microreactor that can produce biodiesel faster and more efficiently that existing methods. This technology could one day enable farmers to manufacture their own fuel from crops they grow on their farms, offering energy independence from volatile petroleum prices and supplies.
• Our blood filter technology that uses microchannels is enabling kidney dialysis machines to shrink in size – from what is currently a big as a phone booth, to that of a small carry-on suitcase. This will give kidney patients new-found freedom to travel long distances instead of being tethered to their local area by lengthy dialysis treatments three days a week.
• Our innovative buoy design is enabling companies to capture energy from the motion of ocean waves. By installing “Wave Energy Parks” off shore, utility companies can generate clean, sustainable electricity for use by communities on shore. These Wave Parks also create good jobs for coastal residents.
