Subject: [Jobs] CCE: Research Faculty Position - Carnegie Mellon University
Message-ID: <4A82B102F147344F872FFBF426386539038C034D@NWS-EXCH1.nws.oregonstate.edu>
Research Faculty Position in Civil and Environmental Engineering
Carnegie Mellon University's Department of Civil and Environmental
Engineering (CEE at CMU) and the
Carnegie Mellon Qatar Campus (CMU-Q) invite applications for a research
faculty position that would
expect the candidate to engage in research with CEE PhD students and
offer opportunities to teach civil and
environmental engineering courses to the students at the CMU-Q campus.
Candidates with professional
interests in water and wastewater engineering are of particular interest
for this position, though complete
focus in this area is not a requirement. We seek a dynamic and energetic
individual interested in this
unique, cross-cultural professional opportunity.
It is intended that this research faculty position will provide a link
between research activities on the Qatar campus and the CEE Department,
and create new educational opportunities for undergraduate and graduate
students in Qatar and Pittsburgh.
The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Carnegie Mellon
(http://www.ce.cmu.edu) has
world-class graduate research programs in advanced infrastructure
systems; environmental engineering,
science and management; green design; and mechanics, materials and
computing. The Department also
maintains strong interdisciplinary ties with other programs at Carnegie
Mellon and elsewhere. The
Carnegie Mellon Campus in Qatar is part of Qatar's Education City and
offers undergraduate programs in
business, computer science, and information systems.
While in Doha, the faculty member will have opportunities for
collaborations in education and research
with other leading academic institutions in Education City (including
Texas A&M) , and for research
funding from the Qatar National Research Foundation (QNRF) as well as
companies operating in Qatar.
This research faculty position is offered with the expectation that the
holder will raise their salary by
charging it to funded research projects. At the faculty member's
discretion and depending on the need in
CMU-Q, they may also teach courses to cover a portion of their salary
not covered by their research
activity. It is also expected that this research faculty member will
advise or co-advise Ph.D. students in the
CEE Department; these students will spend time at both CMU-Q and the
main campus in Pittsburgh. It is
anticipated that the faculty member will spend the 3 summer months
(June-August) in Pittsburgh doing
research with their CEE PhD students and interacting with their CEE
faculty colleagues. This faculty
member's PhD students may also spend whole semesters in either Qatar or
Pittsburgh, be able to take
courses at CEE at CMU or at CMU-Q, and perform research at both locations.
Special allowances will be
provided by CMU-Q to cover the extra costs of this arrangement for the
faculty member and his or her
graduate students.
This will be a 9 month research faculty appointment. Qatar faculty
members normally receive an additional
two months summer support, and have the opportunity to raise an
additional month from research activities.
The appointment will be made at a level commensurate with the
candidate's experience and stature, but we
prefer to make the appointment at an assistant research professor or
associate research professor level. A
PhD in Civil and Environmental Engineering or another field of
engineering is a requirement. Send e-mail
inquiries concerning this position to the chair of the search committee
(J. H. Garrett, Jr., garrett at cmu.edu).
An electronic version of this announcement is also available
(http://www.ce.cmu.edu/facultypositions.html).
Applications will be accepted until the position is filled. Application
review begins June 15, 2008. For full
consideration, applicants should send a resume, transcripts, a
description of their teaching and research
interests and experience, and a list of potential references to:
