P3 - People, Prosperity and the Planet - Program, EPA
Through this design competition, student teams and their faculty
advisors apply for $10,000 grants to design scientific, technical, and
policy solutions to sustainability challenges in the developed or
developing world.
The challenge addressed by these projects can be in any of these areas:
* energy
* built environment
* materials & chemicals
* agriculture
* water
Past P3 teams have explored more efficient ways to produce biofuels,
developed simple water treatment technologies for developing
communities, produced a technology to measure real-time energy use in
buildings, reduced hazardous substance use in laboratories through
improved information and purchasing practices, designed and built an
educational "learning barge" for the Elizabeth River, VA, and designed
an innovative system for the bioremediation of agricultural chemicals.
Teams use the $10,000 grants to design and develop their projects
throughout the 2010/2011 school year. Then in the spring of 2011, all
teams will come to Washington, DC, to compete for EPA's P3 Award at the
7th Annual National Sustainable Design Expo. The students' projects will
be evaluated by a panel of experts convened by the American Association
for the Advancement of Science in all relevant fields, including
sustainability. EPA will use these recommendations to choose the P3
Award winners who will be eligible for an additional grant up to $75,000
to further develop their designs, implement them in the field, and take
them to the marketplace.
Applications are due by January 5, 2010.
Visit our Web site for more information and to view the P3 program

Sustainability and Renewable Energy Mural Contest
Sustainability and renewable energy are the topic of a new mural contest
being sponsored by the School of Electrical Engineering and Computer
Science at Oregon State University
The contest is open to anyone who wishes to submit an entry, and will
recognize the new degree tracks offered in sustainability and renewable
energy for engineering and software systems at OSU.
When complete, the mural will be approximately 10 feet high by 30 feet
wide, and will be located just inside the main door of the Kelley
Engineering Center on the OSU campus. The completed work will allow the
artist to show their vision of OSU leadership in sustainability and
renewable energy, and will serve as a focal point for visitors entering
the building.
To enter the competition, artists should submit a portfolio of previous
work and a scaled-version of their proposed mural, along with a
description and budget for materials. The mural should represent the
spirit of sustainability and renewable energy, and how the fields of
electrical engineering and computer science contribute to the
sustainability of our planet.
Complete information on the competition can be found at
http://eecs.oregonstate.edu/mural, and all entries must be received by
Dec. 31. The winner will be announced Jan. 8, 2010, and will receive all
materials needed for them to create the mural. The work will be unveiled
in a ceremony in mid-February, and the artist will receive a $1,000
honorarium.

SCHOLARSHIPS/FELLOWSHIPS
---------------------------------------------------
The Association for Women in Science (AWIS) is dedicated to achieving
equity and full participation for women in science, mathematics,
engineering and technology. AWIS offers several undergraduate awards.
About 5-10 undergraduate awards of $1,000 are given each year. In
addition, Citations of Merit ($500) may be given. Details
The Colleges of Science and College of Engineering are seeking
nominations for the Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship.
Application & Evaluation Process:
1. Advisors should submit names of student(s) they wish to nominate to
OSU's Goldwater faculty representative, Dr. Kevin Ahern, by email
(ahernk at onid.orst.edu) no later than December 1. Nominations should
include the following information - student name(s), ID number, major,
present year in school (sophomore or junior), number of years of
research experience, OSU GPA, and email address. No formal letter is
required for this phase - a simple emailed note will suffice.
2. Sophomore or junior students with 1) significant undergraduate
research experience and 2) a cumulative OSU GPA above 3.80 will be
contacted directly by Dr. Ahern with information on how to proceed with
the requirements for the application process online and offline. Please
note that a completed student application requires significant online
and offline components and may take considerable time to assemble. To
effectively compete nationally, students cannot have GPAs below 3.80 and
for this reason, we will not consider them for awards no matter how much
research experience they have.
3. All student online and offline application materials must be
completed no later than January 8, 2010 at 5:00 p.m. College of
Engineering applications including original offline materials must be
submitted directly to SKIP ROCHEFORT in the CBEE office (Gleeson 103) in
duplicate (previously we required triplicate). Failure to completely
follow instructions or meet deadlines will result in the student not
being considered further by the nominating committee. Students are
responsible for contacting references early enough in the process that
their letters can be submitted by the January 8 deadline.
4. A committee consisting of OSU faculty representatives from the
Colleges of Science and Engineering will evaluate all applications
completed successfully by the January 8 deadline and will forward the
top four to the Goldwater Foundation for final consideration.
It is worth noting that the Goldwater Web site
(http://www.act.org/goldwater/) allows any student who registers there
to submit an application. However, OSU students who wish to be
considered must go through the process outlined above. Thus, only
students nominated by an advisor or faculty member will be considered by
OSU's selection committee for official nomination.
Established by Congress in 1986, the Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship and
Excellence in Education Foundation operates an educational scholarship
program designed to provide opportunities for outstanding U.S. students
with excellent academic records and demonstrated interest in, and
potential for, careers in mathematics, the natural sciences, and
engineering. In the spring of 2010, the Foundation will award
scholarships to students who will be college juniors or seniors during
the 2010-2011 academic year. In order to be considered for an award,
students must be nominated by their institution.
The scholarship award covers eligible expenses up to a maximum of $7,500
per year. Junior scholarship recipients can expect to receive a maximum
of two years of support. Senior scholarship recipients are eligible for
a maximum of one year of support.
To be eligible, a student must be a current full-time sophomore or
junior and must be pursuing a baccalaureate degree, and be a U.S.
citizen, permanent resident, or U.S. national, who will pursue a career
in mathematics, the natural sciences, or engineering.

Subject: [cs-pro] Deadline to Withdraw from a Specific Course is Friday,
November 13
Message-ID: <4A82B102F147344F872FFBF426386539054AC14A@NWS-EXCH1.nws.oregonstate.edu>
The deadline to withdraw from a specific course is Friday, November
13th.
If you are considering withdrawing from a course, you should talk to the
instructor to find out how you are really doing in the course before
making that decision. If you are currently on academic probation with
the College of Engineering you should check with your advisor before
withdrawing from a course.
The actual "withdraw" process can be done through Student Online
Services using the "drop" function on the registration page by 11:55pm
on Friday, November 13th.
If you have a hold on your account you must go to the Registrar's Office
by 5:00pm on Friday, November 13th to drop a course.
Some factors to take into account:
* how you are doing in the course
* overall workload & if withdrawing from one course will make it
possible to do well overall in the others
* financial aid (complete 36 credits over F, W, Sp terms; or petition)
* scholarships & other sources of support
* International Students & Intercollegiate Athletes must be registered
for at least 12 credits all term to be in status
* preparation for PRO/MECOP/Graduation

Message-ID: <4A82B102F147344F872FFBF426386539054AC153@NWS-EXCH1.nws.oregonstate.edu>
The deadline to change to or from S/U grading is 5:00pm, Friday,
November 13th. The Change of Grading Basis form is available in the
EECS Student Services Office (KEC 1148) or through the EECS Student
Services website (http://eecs.oregonstate.edu/undergraduate/form.html).
The form must be completed (in ink) before it will be reviewed for
approval. All forms require departmental approval from the EECS Student
Services Office (KEC 1148). Do not ask your advisor to approve your S/U
form. If the form is approved you must submit it to the Registrar's
Office by the deadline.
Please review the following points carefully in deciding whether or not
to S/U a course.
1) The maximum number of credits that can be taken S/U is 36.
2) A grade of "S" is awarded for grades of "C-" or better. A
grade of "U" is awarded for grades of "D+" or lower. A "D-" is
considered a passing grade for baccalaureate core courses.
3) If you take courses for letter grades and do well, it may
raise your GPA.
4) Good grades on courses look good to employers so one should
not default to taking courses S/U.
5) Only certain courses can be taken S/U. As a general rule,
courses that are either specifically required for your major (i.e. CS
161, MTH 251) or are prerequisites for required courses (i.e. MTH 112)
cannot be taken S/U. Please check with us if you are not sure if you
can S/U a particular course.

Subject: [cs-pro] Winter Registration Restrictions & Issues
Message-ID: <4A82B102F147344F872FFBF42638653903607A67@NWS-EXCH1.nws.oregonstate.edu>
As Winter Term registration has begun for some and is approaching for
others, we want to remind students of what process you should follow if
you run into a registration restriction when trying to register for your
classes.
If you receive a prerequisite error, but are certain that you have met
the prerequisites for the course you're trying to register for, please
send an email to this email address including your name, student ID #,
and the course that you are trying to register for. We will review your
student file and if you have indeed met the prerequisites, we will lift
the restriction for you.
If you are trying to register for a course for which you have NOT met
the prerequisites, you must obtain approval from the instructor to take
the course. To do this, you must fill out a College of Engineering
Restriction Override" form and bring it to the instructor. If he or she
approves, they will sign the form. You will then need to drop it off in
KEC 1148 to have the registration restriction removed.
Due to unforeseen circumstances, availability of advisors who handle
registration issues will be very limited today through Wednesday.
Emails and override restriction forms will only be read and processed in
the morning for the next couple days. If you have questions to ask in
person, you should also plan to stop in our office between the hours of
8:00am and 12:00pm.
Please let us know if you have any questions.
Sincerely,
EECS Student Services

Subject: [cs-pro] If You Were Asked to Revise Your ACADEMIC PLAN
Message-ID: <4A82B102F147344F872FFBF42638653903607A68@NWS-EXCH1.nws.oregonstate.edu>
It came to our attention that it was not made clear to some students
what they should do if you were asked to revise your two-year academic
plan. If you submitted your academic plan on time and have received it
back with a note indicating that it was incomplete or needed to be
revised (and you did not receive your PIN), you are required to redo it
and make an appointment with your assigned advisor. Please do NOT redo
it and drop it off in our office, as you must see your advisor in order
to obtain your Winter Term registration PIN. We apologize that this was
not made clear to everyone.
If you received your approved academic plan back, with your PIN, but
have quick questions about any changes that were made, please send an
email to eecsundergrad.info at oregonstate.edu or stop by the Student
Services Office in KEC 1148. If you need to speak with someone at length
about changes that were made to your plan, please make an appointment
with your assigned advisor.
Emails were sent out to all students in the beginning of October
containing the name of your advisor. If you deleted this email and do
not know who your advisor is, please send us an email or come to KEC
1148. The receptionist at the front desk can provide you with the name
of your advisor. All advising appointments are made online at the School
of EECS advising webpage
(http://eecs.oregonstate.edu/undergraduate/advising.html).
If you submitted your academic plan late (at a presentation or anytime
after October 23rd), your plan and PIN will be available for pick-up in
the Student Services office starting on November 24th.
Sincerely,
EECS Student Services

P3 - People, Prosperity and the Planet - Program, EPA
Through this design competition, student teams and their faculty
advisors apply for $10,000 grants to design scientific, technical, and
policy solutions to sustainability challenges in the developed or
developing world.
The challenge addressed by these projects can be in any of these areas:
* energy
* built environment
* materials & chemicals
* agriculture
* water

Report: Public wants slow, careful approach to wave energy
A new report summarizing public reactions to wave energy development in
the Pacific Northwest suggests that many people are cautiously
supportive, but want a "go slow" approach that entails careful research
and testing before significant use - an approach that could pose
obstacles to faster development decisions made by private industry and
strong advocacy for alternative energy at the state level. OSU News

* energy
* built environment
* materials & chemicals
* agriculture
* water
