Answers to common wireless questions

Notice: Wireless users are now required to use their ONID account to authenticate. Go here for more information.

Where do I connect?

Wireless access is available in all College of Engineering buildings:

  • Apperson Hall
  • Batchellor Hall
  • Covell Hall
  • Dearborn Hall
  • Gleeson Hall
  • Graf Hall
  • Hovland Hall
  • Kelley Engineering Center
  • Merryfield Hall
  • Owen Hall
  • Rogers Hall
  • Radiation Center
  • Gilmore
  • Wave Lab

How do I connect?

The OSU Wireless network currently offers the 802.11b and 802.11g standards. You will need to have a compatible wireless card in order to connect. Also required is a valid ONID account.

See the following link for information on how to connect to the OSU Wireless network:

Why can't I get to the login page?

If you have a proxy server setup in your web browser (or have it set to automatically detect the proxy), you may be unable to get to the login screen. It will appear to just hang. Disabling the proxy and restarting the web browser should take care of the problem.

Also, make sure your network card is set to get it's IP information from DHCP. That includes DNS servers.

Newer laptops sometimes include a button to turn off the wireless card to conserve battery life. Make sure the wireless card is activated.

What services can I use?

We have chosen to be restrictive in our choice of allowed services. Our choices were made with your security in mind. Therefore, insecure protocols such as telnet (on-campus) have been disabled. Below is a list of allowed protocols:

  • HTTP (web)
  • HTTPS (SSL web)
  • SSH (secure version of telnet. Also allows secure FTP)
  • Secure IMAP (mail protocol)
  • Secure POP (mail protocol)
  • LDAP
  • SMTP (outgoing mail)
  • Instant messaging
  • Telnet off-campus
  • FTP off-campus (except ftp.orst.edu)
  • Streaming RealMedia files
  • NNTP (news groups). Both standard and TLS/SSL
  • Most protocols above 1024

How do I get to my home directory?

Windows file sharing and Appletalk are not allowed on the OSU_Access network. Instead, you should use SFTP, a component of SSH. For more information, go to http://engr.oregonstate.edu/computing/faqs/ssh.

How do I print?

Printing uses standard windows printing. More information is available here.

How do I get help?

If you have problems connecting, or have a question/suggestion, please stop by our Wireless Laptop Helpdesk in Dearborn 107.

Why isn't 802.11a supported?

802.11a uses a seperate transmitter and works in the 5GHz spectrum. The equipment costs are higer to support this protocol. Since a large majority of devices support 802.11b (or 802.11g), we have chosen to focus our resources on supporting those.

Connecting to OSU_Access, but not getting on the network?

You may be connecting to an "ad-hoc" computer-to-computer network instead of connecting to the actual OSU_Access wireless "infrastructure" network. Instructions for fixing this are available here:
