Use Secure Shell (SSH) for access

SSH Secure Shell for Workstations is the window application for end-users. SSH Secure Shell for Workstations brings strong authentication and encryption to the desktops of the Windows and Unix workstations, and enables secure terminal sessions and file transfers to and from the servers. It also enables the secured use of networked applications over untrusted networks. You will need to use SSH when connecting to your ENGR account from off campus or through the wireless network.

You can get SSH from these locations:

  • It is on the ORSTWare CD
    • You can pickup an ORSTWare CD at the Circulation desk located on the main floor of the Valley Library. You can also pick up an ORSTWare CD from the Residential Computer Network located in the Res Life Center on the first floor of Hawley Hall and in the Milne computer lab.
  • Or you can download a client from OSU Network Engineering http://www.net.oregonstate.edu/ssh/
    • Once there fill in the requested information and you can get a trial copy of the SSH Secure Shell.

1. Once you have the software installed, click on the "SSH Secure Shell Client" shortcut. That will bring you to the following window:

2. Once you are at this window click on the "Quick Connect" button near the top of the screen. When the "Connect to Remote Host" window pops up, enter the information as follows:

3. Then enter your ENGR password when prompted. This will bring you to the window shown below, from there hit the "enter" key on your keyboard once.

4. That will bring you to a basic unix command prompt. From here you can enter any unix commands (such as 'pine' to check your e-mail). To transfer files between your engineering space and home computer, click on the "New File Transfer Window" as shown in the picture below:

5. This will bring up a file transfer window. On the left side of the split-screen is your local computer. On the right side are the files on your ENGR account. You can drag and drop files back and forth between the two as needed.

6. If you have any other questions about how to use this software please e-mail support
