Print from the wireless network from Vista 64bit

Notice: Our current printing system is not yet ready to support 64bit Vista driver downloads, so these instructions are somewhat of a workaround. It will be updated as appropriate. You must be an administrator on your Vista machine.

Notice: You will need to repeat the first three steps whenever you reboot before you will able to print.

  1. The first step is establishing a connection to the print server. If you're off campus, you'll need to be running the VPN client. From the Start menu, type in \\printserv.engr.oregonstate.edu and press Enter.

  2. You will be prompted for your ENGR username and password. Make sure to specify ENGINEERING\username. Click OK.

  3. That should bring up a list of printers. If it doesn't come up, make sure you are connected to the wireless network or you're using the VPN client. Close this window.
  4. From the Start menu, go to Control Panel and choose Printers.

  5. Double click "Add Printer."

  6. Click "Add Local Printer"

  7. Choose "Create a New Port" and click Next.

  8. For the port name, use \\printserv.engr.oregonstate.edu\<printername> where <printername> is the lab printer you want to print to (ie dear119)

  9. For an ENGR lab machine, the model is a LaserJet 9050. Choose HP as the Manufacturer and "HP LaserJet 9050 PCL 5" as the printer.

  10. If you already have that driver installed, you will be asked if you want to use an existing driver or replace the driver. Unless you have a reason, choose to use the existing driver.

  11. Change the name to something meaningful to identify the printer. You may also choose to set it as your default printer.

  12. After clicking Next, you should get a confirmation page that the printer has been added. You should be able to print a test page at this point.
