Connect to the Windows Terminal Server from an OS X computer
The College of Engineering provides Windows-based terminal servers for student use. This provides users with a full Windows environment and the latest software in use by the College of Engineering for Windows, Mac and Linux computers from on or off campus. The following document details how to connect to the terminal servers from a Mac machine.
Obtaining the software:
-
Visit http://www.microsoft.com/mac/downloads.aspx and scroll down to the bottom of the page. Under the product “Remote Desktop” select “Microsoft Remote Desktop Connection Client for Mac 2”. Download the English distribution.
-
Once the download is complete and extracted, drag the software to your Applications folder to install it.
Connecting:
Note: If you are connecting from an off-campus computer, we encourage you to install and run the VPN service.
-
Open the program called “Remote Desktop Connection”
-
You will be prompted with a window that has space to put in a server name. The address you are going to want to use is windows.engr.oregonstate.edu.
-
You may want to configure some of the options to your desired preferences. To do that, go to the RDC menu and select Preferences.
-
There should be several tabs. The one that should be configured right away is the “Display” tab.
-
Specify how big you want your desktop and how many colors in the Display tab. If you want it to be full screen, select "full screen" from the size drop-down box. Also check the "Don't show the Macintosh Dock and menu bar" if you want full screen.
-
Once you are satisfied with the options click Connect and you will be brought to a login screen. Provide your ENGR username and password and make sure the domain is set to ENGINEERING.
Using the Terminal Server:
For information on using the terminal server, see this link.
Useful Tips:
-
If you would like to have the system log in for you, under the general tab fill in your credentials and check “add to Keychain” only if this is your personal machine.
-
A previous version of this document told you to connect to term1.engr.oregonstate.edu or term2.engr.oregonstate.edu. An old version of the Remote Desktop client had a limitation that has been addressed and you are strongly encouraged to update to the latest client and connect to windows.engr.oregonstate.edu.
