New to ENGR Computing

Welcome to the College of Engineering at Oregon State University! COE has a lot of computing resources available for your use, so let's get started!

1. Accounts

You will need two accounts for your time in COE. To setup either account, you will need to know your Student ID number and GAP. If you don't know that information, or just to verify it, you can go to Student Online Services:

http://infosu.oregonstate.edu/login

Your ONID account is the main OSU account used for all email communication. If you don't have that account, you should set that up right now:

http://onid.oregonstate.edu

To access your College of Engineering resources, you need to have an ENGR account. You can get that at the TEACH website. This site is used to manage all of the ENGR account settings:

http://engr.oregonstate.edu/teach

Note: Your passwords are very important. They should never be shared with anyone. Never send your password over email. We will never ask for your password.

2. Wireless

OSU offers a campus-wide wireless network called OSU_Access. The first time you connect, you will want to follow the link to permanently register your laptop.

3. Email

Since you have two OSU accounts, we recommend that you forward your email from your ENGR account to your ONID account. You can do that at the TEACH website:

http://engr.oregonstate.edu/teach

After you login, on the left, click the "Email Forwarding" link under "Email Tools". Then put in your ONID email address (username@onid.oregonstate.edu)

Alternately, you can forward your ONID email account to your ENGR account. You can do that at the ONID site: http://onid.oregonstate.edu.

Note: We strongly recommend that you do NOT forward your OSU email to an off-campus email address (Hotmail, Gmail, etc). Every once in a while, OSU gets added to an email blacklist and these email providers will simply drop the emails. If your email stays on campus, we can help with troubleshooting and your email is backed up on a regular basis.

To check your email, webmail is available here:

http://webmail.oregonstate.edu

If you want to use an email client and choose to use your ENGR account for email, you can find instructions here: http://engr.oregonstate.edu/computing/email

4. VPN

While off-campus, to be able to access your files and other resources on-campus, you will want to install the VPN client. You can also use VPN while on campus on the wireless network. The installers are available here (ENGR account required):

Windows (32bit): vpnclient-win-msi-5.0.04.0300-k9.exe
Mac: vpnclient-darwin-4.9.01.0100-universal-k9.dmg
Linux: vpnclient-linux-x86_64-4.8.02.0030-k9.tar.gz

Windows 64bit users will need to use the WebVPN service here: https://sds.oregonstate.edu

Once you have the client installed, you will want to install profiles for off-campus and on-campus use. Download each file, then use the Import command in the VPN client to install it:

On-campus profile
Off-campus profile

When you connect with one of these profiles or use WebVPN, it will ask for your ONID account username and password.

5. Accessing file storage

You have access to file storage space on the Engineering servers. This space is available from anywhere and is backed up nightly. From off-campus, you need to use the VPN client for this.

From Windows: Go to Start->Run and type in: \\stak.engr.oregonstate.edu\username. For username, use ENGINEERING\username

From Mac: From the Finder, click the Go menu, then "Connect to server": smb://stak.engr.oregonstate.edu/username. For domain, use ENGINEERING.

From Linux: 'smbclient -U username -W engineering //stak.engr.oregonstate.edu/username'

You can also use SSH and SFTP to connect to your account. SSH gives you console access to a unix environment. SFTP is a secure file transfer method. The hostname you want to connect to is: access.engr.oregonstate.edu

Windows: The SSH client is PuTTY. For SFTP, a good choice is FileZilla.

putty.exe
FileZilla_3.2.7.1_win32-setup.exe

Mac: You can use the Terminal application and run: 'ssh access.engr.oregonstate.edu'. For sftp, we recommend Cyberduck.

Cyberduck-3.2.1.dmg (for Mac OS X 10.4 or 10.5)
Cyberduck-3.3b3.zip (beta for Mac OS X 10.6)

Linux: ssh and sftp are included in most distributions.

6. Printing

You have access to several printers in COE and printing is provided for free up to 1000 sides of paper (explained here). For information on connecting to the printers, follow this link:

http://engr.oregonstate.edu/computing/personal/103

7. Software

There are several software packages available for free for COE students. This includes software from Microsoft, VMware, MathWorks, etc. We maintain the list of software here:

http://engr.oregonstate.edu/computing/personal/149

Microsoft Office is available from the OSU Bookstore in the Memorial Union for $69.

8. Lab Computers

The College of Engineering maintains several computer labs for your use. They are modern desktop machines that include all of the software needed for your coursework. More information about the labs is available here:

http://engr.oregonstate.edu/computing/labs

We also offer a Windows terminal service that allows you to connect remotely and run common Windows tasks. The server name to connect to is: windows.engr.oregonstate.edu. More information is available here.

Windows: It's built in and called "Remote Desktop Connection"
Mac: RDC201_ALL.dmg
Linux: http://www.rdesktop.org

9. Getting Help

Every once in a while, you're going to need help with your ENGR account or free software we offer or getting your laptop to function properly. We have a wireless helpdesk that would be happy to help you with laptop and software questions. They're in Dearborn 107 and are open extended hours this year. More information is available here:
