Outlook 2007 for IMAP
MS Outlook 2007 setup for IMAP
There are two parts to this guide:
- Instructions on setting up MS Outlook 2007 to receive and send ENGR mail.
- Optional setup to link your sent-mail folder. (The sent-mail folder will only work for mail accounts that are already set up.)
I. Follow these instructions to setup receiving and sending mail:
For each step, refer to the picture below it.
| 1. |
Open MS Outlook 2007 and pull down Tools, click on Account Settings. |
| 2. |
In the Account Settings dialog, click New. |
| 3. |
Check the Manually configure server settings or additional server types box and click Next. |
| 4. |
Make sure Internet E-mail is selected and click Next. |
| 5. |
Enter in the following settings: |
Your Name: Put in your First and Last name (or whatever you want it to say when you email people) |
E-mail Address: Put in your ENGINEERING email (e.g. songg@engr.oregonstate.edu) |
Account Type: Make sure this is IMAP |
Incoming Mail Server: mail.engr.oregonstate.edu |
Outgoing Mail Server: mail.engr.oregonstate.edu |
User Name: Put in your login name (e.g. songg) |
Password: Type in your password (this is so we can test the setup in a later step) |
It is optional to check Remember Password, if you share a computer with other people and you don't want them looking at your e-mail, it would be wise NOT to check this. |
Click More Settings |
6. |
An Internet E-mail Settings dialog should pop up. Under Mail Account, set the name to what you want the mail account to be listed as in Outlook (e.g. Engineering, ENGR Mail, etc), then click on the Outgoing Server tab. |
| 7. |
Check the My outgoing server (SMTP) requires authentication box, then select Use same settings as my incoming mail server, click the Advanced tab. |
8. |
Examine the diagram below, for the Incoming and Outgoing server's type of encrypted connection, select SSL for both. The Port Number for Incoming is 993, for Outgoing it is 465. Under Root folder path type in ~/mail. Click Ok |
| 9. |
Back on the Add New E-mail Account dialog, click Test Account Settings |
10. |
A Test Account Settings dialog will come up, wait for it to run a couple tests. If the tests passed then your setup was successful. Click Close. If you failed any tests you need to go back and double check the settings in steps 5, 7, and 8 |
| 11. |
Back on the Add New E-mail Account dialog, click Next |
| 12. |
Click Finish and you're done! |
II. Follow these instructions to link your sent-mail folder:
The sent-mail folder will only work for mail accounts that are already set up. For each step, refer to the picture below it.
| 1. |
Expand your engineering mail folder (or whatever you named it, refer to Part I-step 6 of this guide), select your Inbox. Pull down Tools and click on IMAP folders. |
| 2. |
The IMAP folders dialog will come up. In the search field type sent-mail, then click Query. |
| 3. |
Select sent-mail under All, click Subscribe, then click Ok. |
| 4. |
Check to make sure the sent-mail folder shows up under your engineering mail folder. That's it! You're done, you can now check your sent mail. |
