What services can I use?

We have chosen to be restrictive in our choice of allowed services. Our choices were made with your security in mind. Therefore, insecure protocols such as telnet (on-campus) have been disabled. Below is a list of allowed protocols:

  • HTTP (web)
  • HTTPS (SSL web)
  • SSH (secure version of telnet. Also allows secure FTP)
  • Secure IMAP (mail protocol)
  • Secure POP (mail protocol)
  • LDAP
  • SMTP (outgoing mail)
  • Instant messaging
  • Telnet off-campus
  • FTP off-campus (except ftp.orst.edu)
  • Streaming RealMedia files
  • NNTP (news groups). Both standard and TLS/SSL
  • Most protocols above 1024
