Answers to common wireless questions
What services can I use?
We have chosen to be restrictive in our choice of allowed services. Our choices were made with your security in mind. Therefore, insecure protocols such as telnet (on-campus) have been disabled. Below is a list of allowed protocols:
- HTTP (web)
- HTTPS (SSL web)
- SSH (secure version of telnet. Also allows secure FTP)
- Secure IMAP (mail protocol)
- Secure POP (mail protocol)
- LDAP
- SMTP (outgoing mail)
- Instant messaging
- Telnet off-campus
- FTP off-campus (except ftp.orst.edu)
- Streaming RealMedia files
- NNTP (news groups). Both standard and TLS/SSL
- Most protocols above 1024
